Two layouts, five languages. English and Polish on one, Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian on the other. Both carry the typographic layer.
Why FUTO Keyboard
Android has no way to install a system keyboard layout the way Windows and macOS do. FUTO Keyboard is an open-source keyboard whose layouts are plain text files, so the layout ports without writing an app. It works offline and does not collect what you type.
English and Polish on one layout. Polish diacritics sit on the letter you would expect — hold a for ą, hold z for ż and ź — and each one is printed on the key, so you do not have to remember where it lives.
Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian on one layout. The extra letters sit on their nearest base letter: hold у for ў, г for ґ, е for ё and є, и for і and ї.
The alt-page key on the bottom row opens a page of dead keys. Tap an accent, then a letter, and they combine — press ´ then o for ó. Tap the same key again to go back.
Typographic characters
Most are already on FUTO’s own symbols pages, so these layouts deliberately leave those alone. Hold the quote key for „ “ ” « », the hyphen for – — ·, the caret for arrows, the degree sign for ′ ″. The alt page carries only what is missing everywhere else, including the invisible spaces: no-break, narrow no-break, thin, and the soft hyphen.
Which language to set it to
The Latin layout is offered for both Polish and English. Pick English if you mostly write English and you keep FUTO’s English swipe model and word predictions. Pick Polish if you mostly write Polish and you get Polish suggestions instead. Either way both languages type correctly — only the prediction quality differs.
One dictionary for both languages
FUTO loads one dictionary per language, so typing English and Polish under a single keyboard means merging the two word lists. Here it is, already built: 344,389 words.
This is also what makes swipe typing work in Polish. Gesture typing draws its candidates from the loaded dictionary, and FUTO ships none for Polish, so a Polish keyboard cannot swipe at all until one is imported.
FUTO files a dictionary under the language written inside it and offers no choice at import time, so take the one matching the language your keyboard is set to.
Open the downloaded file and hand it to FUTO Keyboard, or go to Languages, your language, Dictionary. An imported dictionary replaces the built-in one for that language; removing it restores the original.
What differs from the desktop layout
An accent followed by a space gives the combining mark rather than the standalone accent, and the space is swallowed.
Letters sit on the base letter they belong to, not on the key the desktop layout uses. A phone has no AltGr, so holding z for both ż and ź makes more sense than splitting them across two keys.
On the Cyrillic layout an accent stacked onto a letter that already carries one — Й, Ё — produces a doubled mark instead of the single precomposed letter the desktop layout gives. NFC reproduces 39 of its 57 desktop compositions; the Latin layout reproduces 177 of 179.
A few desktop characters have no Android equivalent and are not included.
